Welcome to Peep The Situation
A letter from our founders
Shirley Ann Collins Cook was a daughter, wife, mother, sister, and good friend to many but most of all she was a teacher. It was not only her job description at the high school where she taught English that we both attended just north of Houston in Conroe, Texas, it was what she exuded from every pore of her body.
With her love and firm but empathetic guidance she taught us many lessons over the years: always have your clothes ironed before the work/school week, hard work is the only real secret to success and if you lose something important to you put a glass on top of the fridge upside down and you will eventually find it.
We were devastated when she passed (far too early) from complications associated with diabetes, but after we dealt with the fact of her physical presence being gone all that was left was inspiration.
In her 66 years she taught two black boys, as different from each other as snowflakes, to become strong black men and communicators, by taking vastly different paths to end up at the same point. She mentored, tutored and educated 1,000s of students – often offering them the clothes off our backs if needed and, perhaps most importantly – she gave us all a voice and the confidence to use it.
As a tribute to her memory we want to expand on her work. What is Peep The Situation? It’s the voice of generations old and new. It’s a place to go for news, entertainment and fun. It’s about spotlighting injustices in the world and giving a platform to those who would correct them. It’s about us all coming together for an evolving multicultural experience, that might not look a lot like it started out in the end – but will always reflect the community that it represents.
Thank you for reading. We can’t promise you that we will be perfect, but we can promise you that we will never stop striving for perfection.
Sincerely,
J Mac & Jon E. Garrett
